Ammended Drivers Hours (Enforced From 11th April 2007)

The new driver's hours regulations in April 2007 also bought changes in rest periods. A summary of these changes can be found below.

These are specific to drivers under European Driver's Hours regulations.

Daily Driving

  • Maximum daily driving of 9 hours but can be extended to 10 hours 2 days a week.
  • Weekly limit of 56 hours driving time.
  • Maximum driving of 90 hours in each pair of weeks. So, for example, week 1 + week 2 must be less than 90 hours. Week 2 + week 3 must be less than 90 hours, and so forth...
  • Maximum of 4.5 hours driving before having a break of at least 45 minutes. The 45 minutes can be split but the first must be a minimum of 15 minutes and the second must be at least 30 minutes.

Examples of illegal combination:

3 hours driving | 30 minutes break | 1.5 hours driving | 15 minutes break | 1.5 hour driving | commence daily rest period

Example of legal combination:

3 hours driving | 15 minutes break | 1.5 hour drivings | 30 minutes break | 1.5 hour driving | commence daily rest period

Weekly Rest

  1. A weekly rest period must start no later than from the end of 6 consecutive 24-hour periods from the end of the previous weekly rest period.
  2. In any two consecutive weeks a driver shall take at least:
    1. 2 regular weekly rest periods (each a minimum of at least 45 hours each); or
    2. 1 regular weekly rest period and one reduced weekly rest period of a minimum of 24 hours.
  3. A weekly rest period that falls in 2 weeks may be counted in either week, but not in both.
  4. Any reductions shall be compensated by an equivalent period of rest taken in full before the end of the 3rd week following the week in which the reduction occurred. Rest taken as compensation shall be attached to another rest period of at least 9 hours.

Please note that a week here is defined as 0000hrs on Monday to 2400hrs on Sunday
